Top Picks: 2018 Kids’ Halloween Costumes

Anyone else having trouble figuring out the kids’ Halloween costumes this year?

We have one little one in our house who is stifled by all of the choices.

“I just can’t decide. Maybe a Minion since I have overalls. Or maybe a pug-i-corn. (A cross between a pug and unicorn, I’m told.) Or a police officer.”

We also have a pre-teen who is too cool for a costume this year. However, I think we still need a back-up plan for when he decides on Halloween night that he does, indeed, want to trick-or-treat.

So, for all of those trick-or-treaters who can’t–or won’t–choose, we thought it would be fun to put together some of this year’s top picks for kids’ Halloween costumes. We also threw in a few of our favorites from years past.

Get in the Game

OK, so this is a given. But expect to see A LOT of Fortnite-inspired costumes for all ages. For girls, we’ll likely see Brite Bombers and Cuddle Team leaders. For the boys, expect Skull Troopers and Dark Voyagers.

We’re also looking forward to a lot of creative takes on Fortnite dances including: Orange Justice, Flossing and Boneless.

Movie Inspiration

This year’s popular movies are likely to inspire a full cast of Halloween costumes.

Think Han Solo, Mary Poppins, Christopher Robin, The Incredibles 2, and, of course, Hotel Transylvania 3 with Mavis, Dracula and Frankenstein.

Plus, October marks the 25thAnniversary of the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Movie director Tim Burton is always an inspiration for Halloweening. But this year, we’re sure to see even more Jack Skellingtons and Sallys running about.

Harry Potter

Three of the top 10 best-sellers in kids’ Halloween costumes on Amazon are Harry Potter costumes or accessories.

With many movie theaters re-releasing the Harry Potter films on the big screen this fall in honor of the 20thanniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, it’s no surprise that Potter costumes have put a spell on kids once again.

Best-Sellers

Over-sized inflatable T-Rexes and sumo wrestlers of years past are likely to be ginormous sellers again.

In fact, Giant T-Rex is currently number one on the Amazon best-sellers list. (Number two is Harry Potter.) Elsa from Frozen is still strong at number three.

Little Trick-or-Treaters

Superheroes never go out of style. (Neither do superhero books for big brothers and sisters. Wink. Wink.) I was Wonder Woman as a kiddo in the 1980s. My oldest daughter was Wonder Woman a couple years ago. My littlest has it on her short list this year.

For boys, Black Panther, which in March became the highest-grossing superhero movie in the U.S., looks like a popular choice this year. The light-up version is sure to be a hit.

For the littlest trick-or-treaters, Disney Junior’s Vampirina and PJ Masks characters will be popular, as well as classics like ninjas, astronauts, pumpkins, skeletons, ghosts and witches.

Classics like an astronaut are always popular.

Book-Inspired Costumes

For your mini bibliophile, we love the idea of book-inspired costumes.

Brightly offers some fun ideas including James and the Giant Peach, The Pigeon (from Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus), and Wimpy Kid from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Do-It-Yourself

Some of the most memorable costumes of our past Halloweens are the ones that were homemade. One little neighbor boy won lots of attention and candy when he made his own claw-machine costume.

The most-worn costume in our house–used for costume parties by every member of our household at some point–was an oversized, homemade Pac-Man costume.

This homemade Pac-Man costume was a hit.

Really, nothing beats a DIY kids’ Halloween costume.

And the best part is that if you make the costume yourself, you can find inspiration anywhere—maybe even your favorite children’s book.
